Can Sea Buckthorn Juice Cause Loose Motions?

10 Sept 2026  •  Amisha Surana

Sea buckthorn juice can cause loose motions in some people, usually in the first few days and usually because of quantity rather than the fruit itself. It is not common, it is rarely serious, and it is almost always solved by taking less.

Here is why it happens and what to do.

Why it can happen

The juice is acidic

Sea buckthorn is naturally tart, and that acidity is real. On an empty stomach, in a large quantity, in someone whose digestion is sensitive, it can move things along faster than usual.

Too much, too soon

This is the most common cause by a distance. Someone reads about the benefits, decides more must be better, and starts with 50 or 60 ml on day one. The body reacts to the volume, not to any defect in the fruit.

It is new

Any concentrated new food can produce a few days of adjustment. This usually settles.

What to do about it

Three adjustments solve almost every case.

Reduce the amount. Drop to 10 ml a day for a week, then build up slowly. Starting small is the single most effective change.

Dilute more. The same juice in a much larger glass of water is considerably gentler.

Take it with food. The usual advice is before meals, but if your stomach objects, take it with or just after a light meal instead. Slightly less efficient absorption is a small price for being able to continue.

When it is not the juice

Worth saying plainly: if you started sea buckthorn on the same day you also changed something else — a new supplement, travel, unfamiliar food, an illness going around the house — do not assume the juice is responsible. Change one thing at a time and the answer usually becomes obvious.

When to stop and ask someone

Reduce the dose and give it a few days. If loose motions continue beyond that, stop and speak to a doctor. Persistent digestive symptoms deserve a proper look rather than a self-managed experiment, and this is true whatever you think the cause is.

The same applies if you have an existing digestive condition. In that case talk to your doctor before starting rather than after something goes wrong.

Check the product as well

One thing worth ruling out. Some sea buckthorn products contain added sweeteners, and sugar alcohols in particular are a well-known cause of loose motions in sensitive people.

If a juice is producing this reliably, read the ingredient list before blaming the berry. Our juices are made without added sugar or artificial sweeteners, and reading the label is a habit worth having with any brand.

The short version

Uncommon, usually caused by taking too much too fast, usually fixed by starting at 10 ml and building up. If it persists after you have reduced the amount, stop and see a doctor.
