Sea Buckthorn Juice and Summer Dehydration
13 Sept 2026 • Riddhi Jain
Sea buckthorn juice is not a rehydration drink, and if you are dehydrated it is not what you need. What it can do is make water easier to drink, which for many people is the actual problem.
What dehydration needs
Dehydration is a loss of water and electrolytes — sodium and potassium in particular. Correcting it means replacing both. That is why oral rehydration solution exists, and why it contains salt and sugar in specific proportions rather than fruit extract.
If someone is genuinely dehydrated — dark urine, dizziness, dry mouth, confusion, or after significant vomiting or diarrhoea — the answer is ORS or medical care, not a wellness juice. That is worth saying clearly before anything else.
Where a juice is genuinely useful
Most people in Indian summers are not clinically dehydrated. They are mildly under-hydrated, all day, because they do not drink enough water and do not much enjoy drinking it.
That is a behaviour problem rather than a physiological one, and behaviour problems respond to small practical changes. A glass of water that tastes of something is easier to finish than a glass of water that does not.
Taken as 20 to 30 ml diluted in a full glass, sea buckthorn juice is mostly a glass of water. If it gets you to drink one more than you otherwise would, that is a real contribution — just not the one the question implies.
Why not sugary drinks instead
The usual alternatives — packaged juices, colas, sweetened iced teas — carry a substantial sugar load. A juice made without added sugar does not.
Our juices contain no added sugar, artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners, which is checkable on the label rather than something you have to take on trust. If you are unsure how to read one, we wrote a guide to it.
Practical summer hydration
Drink through the day rather than in bursts. Keep water visible. Attach a glass to habits you already have — waking up, meals, returning home. Watch for salt loss if you are working outdoors or sweating heavily, because water alone does not replace electrolytes.
And use traditional options where they suit: buttermilk, coconut water, lemon water with a pinch of salt. India has solved this problem several times already.
The summary
Sea buckthorn juice is a nutrient-dense food that dilutes into water. It is not an electrolyte drink and not a treatment for dehydration.
If it makes you drink more water, take it. If you are actually dehydrated, reach for ORS and, if it is serious, a doctor.
